Gentlemen Reg – The Boyfriend Song

I saw Gentlemen Reg perform at Trazac on New Years and it was one of my favourite live performances. It was well past midnight and everyone in the packed little tavern seemed to huddle together and love each other as we sang the song together (as lame as that sounds). This song is sort of my January anthem. Buy the album: gentlemenreg.com

Burial - Untrue
It’s truly a travesty that I’m always doing something else while listening to Untrue (mostly course readings oh joy!). The soundscape that imbues the room is well crafted and perfect for headphones while wondering a post-rain urban jungle. Whenever I listen to the album I feel like the clutter in my life is cut down and I gain a clean slate.

Flutter

Monkey Album Cover

Bonobo - Dial ‘M’ for Monkey
The second track entitled Flutter is the title song for jPod (the amazing show that has cruelly been denied a second season by the evil ad revenue monkeys at CBC). The song hooked me in a such a way that I needed to feel more of that sound. The rest of the album is pretty cohesive and makes the best ‘white’ noise especially for washing dishes or studying.

Carps Album Cover

The Carps - The Young And Passionate Days Of Carpedia
The Carps played during Orientation Week at Western and that show reminded me how awesome live music is and how a great performance is a part of that. Comparisons to Death from Above and White Stripes are lazy. There are only 5 tracks on the album but it’s equal if not worth more than the typical 20-track-crap that gets pumped into the scene. They have a second EP coming out that is less heavy bass and more technorock yet still has that ‘Carps’ feeling.

Regina Spektor – Hotel Song
Tom Williams – Hotel Song
Out of the weekly batch of mp3s I download from various blogs, Tom Williams’ version of the Hotel Song caught my attention among many crooner with a guitar tracks. The sweet tune sung with such an optimistic sound really makes the ‘dark’ lyrics resonate. Actually, I hadn’t even realized that is was a cover until I found the original in Regina Spektor’s album, which by its own merits is full of wicked lyrics and angelic sound.
